Mijas authorities are urging visitors to use extra care at the public barbecue facilities in Parque El Esparragal, a popular recreation area near Mijas Golf. The park’s tree cover and proximity to surrounding countryside make fire prevention a particular concern, according to a report by Euro Weekly News.

The facilities are used for outdoor meals and family gatherings. The warning is a reminder that a fire can remain hazardous after cooking ends: embers may escape, and charcoal or ash that has not cooled fully can ignite nearby material.

The park is close to the Entrerrios area, where a fire could spread into surrounding vegetation. Euro Weekly News also reported that Mijas has previously identified El Esparragal as lying within 400 metres of forest land and within a forest-influence zone subject to seasonal fire restrictions.

Visitors should not leave a lit barbecue unattended, keep combustible items away from the cooking area and ensure charcoal and embers are completely extinguished before leaving. Ash should be disposed of safely, and visitors should follow signs, local instructions and any temporary restrictions.

Andalucian rules include a period of heightened fire risk that normally runs from 1 June to 15 October. The rules that apply can depend on the location and activity, so the dates alone should not be taken as permission to light a fire outside that period. Check current regional rules and local notices before using the facilities.

The report noted that a wildfire spread around Mijas Golf in July 2025, with firefighters working through the night to contain it. No current fire or closure at El Esparragal was reported. The immediate practical step for park users is to use the designated facilities responsibly and check for any updated restrictions before visiting.
