On a visit to work at the former Pascual Hospital in Málaga, Antonio Sanz, the regional government’s first vice-president and minister for the presidency, health and emergencies, said the inpatient unit and endoscopy area are expected to be ready in the first quarter of 2027. They form the second phase of the Andalusian regional government’s renovation of the building’s second floor, which will have 35 double rooms, seven rooms for people with reduced mobility and three endoscopy rooms.

Sanz said the facilities would address the province’s shortage of hospital beds and meet admission needs for patients requiring palliative care, geriatric care and care for multiple chronic conditions. He also said the centre would receive its first patients in the second half of November, as work on the first phase on the ground floor nears completion. That phase began on February 13 and includes an Integrated Care Unit and 16 outpatient consultation rooms.

The renovation represents an investment of €6.5 million. The centre, affiliated with the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) under an agreement, will have 259 clinical and non-clinical staff. Sanz said it would improve access to specialties and care for people with complex chronic conditions, and allow services in the pavilions of the General Hospital, Civil Hospital and José Estrada Specialist Care Centre to be reorganised and expanded after some services move to the former Pascual site.

The Provincial Purchasing Centre moved to the building in April. The ground floor will also house the Integrated Care Unit, with 16 treatment stations, and 16 outpatient consultation rooms. The consultation and treatment areas have separate entrances. Four gastroenterology rooms are planned near the building entrance and admissions area; the other 12 will be for internal medicine, neurology and anaesthesia.

Work on the second-floor phase, covering more than 2,300 square metres, began on August 10. In addition to inpatient rooms and endoscopy facilities, the floor will include a patient preparation and recovery room, two pre-anaesthesia consultation rooms, staff facilities, family information rooms, work rooms, storage and other support areas.

Sanz was accompanied on the visit by Carolina España, the regional government’s third vice-president and minister for economy, finance and European funds, along with other health officials and representatives.
