Teatro Cánovas, run by the Andalusian Agency of Cultural Institutions under the regional Department of Culture, Historical Heritage and Sport, presented its programme for the 2026–2027 season. It includes 107 performances by 49 companies: 26 from Andalusia, including 12 from Málaga; 20 from other Spanish regions; and two international companies. The season begins on 2 and 3 October and features theatre, dance, circus, music, street arts and new performance languages.
The programme is built around accessibility and intergenerational work, alongside support for companies and creators during the artistic process. Málaga company La Coracha Teatro will open the season with the premiere of “La pastilla de la felicidad” on 2 and 3 October. October’s programme also includes Truca Circus, Generación Z, Punto Cero Company, Piermario Salerno, María Paz Sayago and Maroma Teatro.
Andalusian works feature prominently throughout the season. In November, Marcat Dance will present “Pueblo,” following its premiere at Teatro Central in Seville. December includes “Bromo,” a multidisciplinary concert by the Andalusian creative project Las flores no lloran, on 10 December. The programme continues through 2027, with a particular focus on movement arts in January, and includes performances by Histrión Teatro, Led Silhouette and British artist Yinka Esi Graves in February. Further works are scheduled through June, when the season concludes with the premiere of “Silencio Pandora” by La Contraria and Alex Peña’s performance “Y lo demás no es nada. De Ocaña a Califato ¾.”
Support for artists is a strategic part of the venue’s work this season. Teatro Cánovas makes its spaces and resources available for research, rehearsals and production, as well as providing a stage for artists to present completed work. In September, La Coracha Teatro held a residency to develop “La pastilla de la felicidad,” while Jóvenes Clásicos worked on rehearsals for its educational production “Los guardianes del verso.” Company 16-20 had a residency in Sala B from 4 to 28 September, and the Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra worked in Sala A from 14 to 18 September on rehearsals for recordings of “Medea,” by Manolo Sanlúcar, and “Wayfaring Concert,” by David Leisner.
The season also continues the venue’s Laboratory and Permanent Seminar on Mediation, Accessibility and Audience Engagement, supported by Fundación Unicaja. Its projects are intended to build connections among the venue, artists and the public, with attention to accessibility, participation and developing new audiences. Other ongoing activities include Proyecto Thespis, the 35th Theatre, Music and Dance Cycle, Para la niñ@s y jóvenes, Escena Joven and Zeta: Navegantes.
