The Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) is to establish its first dedicated premises in Mijas in a municipal property on Calle Antequera, La Cala. The town hall has formalised a transfer of use for an initial 10 years, potentially extendable to 30 if the required conditions and procedures are met.
The agreement was signed by Mijas mayor Ana Mata and AECC provincial president Juan Carlos Martín at the La Cala district office. The local government says the premises will be used for social and health services. The association will be responsible for renovating and adapting the property before it is used.
The space measures about 78 square metres, with a further 46 square metres of terrace. Plans submitted by the AECC envisage three offices for professional services, including psychological support, social work and physiotherapy. The association also plans wellbeing workshops and healthcare services that include nutrition and speech therapy.
The rooms may also be used by volunteers carrying out awareness and prevention campaigns or providing companionship. The town hall says the services are intended for cancer patients and their families; the AECC says the new base will help it expand the free support it provides locally.
The Local Government Board approved the transfer on 26 September. Under the agreement, the premises must be used at least four days a week, and the association must submit an annual report of its activities so the town hall can assess whether the agreed purposes are being met.
The property is not yet described as operational: the AECC must first complete the necessary refurbishment and adaptation. The announcement does not give a timetable for those works or for the start of services.
