A new exhibition in Marbella pays tribute to photographer Mercedes Medina Palma, whose work is being shown at the municipal Parque de Miraflores centre. Medina Palma, who died last year, spent more than 25 years taking part in the city’s Arte y Cultura photography classes.
Titled “A su aire”, the exhibition brings together more than 30 photographs made using analogue techniques. It was organised by fellow students from the Taller Abierto de Fotografía Analógica and their teacher, Mª José Villanueva, as the workshop’s academic season came to a close.
The selection spans landscapes, portraits, studio nudes, still lifes and abstract images. It also reflects the range of processes Medina Palma explored, from conventional black-and-white prints to experimental techniques including chemigrams and solarisation, as well as the historic gum bichromate process.
Visitors can also see pinhole photographs taken with simple cameras made from items such as tins and shoeboxes. Most of the prints are originals produced by Medina Palma in the photography classroom’s darkroom. Students have also developed some images from her archive that had not previously been printed, allowing them to be included in the show.
The title, which translates roughly as “in her own way”, reflects how her classmates remember her: as cheerful, affectionate, committed, energetic, enthusiastic and free-spirited. The exhibition is intended as a journey through both her personal perspective and the techniques she used.
“A su aire” is on display in “El Pasillo” at the Centro Polivalente Parque de Miraflores, on Avenida José Luis Morales Marín in Marbella. The municipal agenda lists the exhibition as running until 19 June 2027. The venue address is given as Calle José Luis Morales Marín, 20, local 17, 29601 Marbella; the listing does not provide separate visiting hours beyond a 19:00 entry.
