The Andalusia Regional Government’s Department of Public Works and Mobility has begun resurfacing a 10-kilometre section of the A-357, the motorway providing access to Málaga. The work has a budget of €3 million and is part of the regional government’s road resurfacing plan for roads under its jurisdiction.
Work began on the carriageway heading from Málaga towards Campillos, on the section between the city and Málaga Tech. It will also take place in the opposite direction. The motorway carries around 74,000 vehicles a day, so the work is being done at night, with lane reductions, to limit disruption to traffic.
Regional Minister for Public Works and Mobility Mario Muñoz-Atanet said the section was chosen because it is one of the busiest access routes in Málaga and Andalucía. He said the investment would improve the motorway’s condition and driving comfort.
Muñoz-Atanet also cited other recent and ongoing investment on the A-357: a new bus-and-high-occupancy-vehicle lane, opened at the end of the year at a cost of €8.5 million, and the start of work to convert a further section of the A-357 between Casapalma and Cerralba into a motorway, with a budget of €51 million.
The regional resurfacing plan has a total budget of €151.5 million across Andalucía, including €17.5 million for Málaga province. Planned work includes repairing damaged and uneven sections, milling and replacing pavement, renewing lower road layers, laying asphalt mixes, sealing surfaces, repainting road markings and replacing or adjusting safety barriers and other road equipment.
The 69-kilometre A-357 runs from Campillos through the Guadalhorce Valley to the A-7 near Málaga. It connects settlements along the valley with the city and the coast. Work has also begun to convert a four-kilometre section between Casapalma and Cerralba into a motorway.
