Marbella’s Nueva Andalucía active ageing centre is set for a major expansion, with construction scheduled to begin at the end of the year. The municipal project will increase the facility from about 360 square metres to more than 900 square metres, alongside a landscaped outdoor area of around 1,300 square metres.

The plans were discussed at a meeting between Mayor Ángeles Muñoz, municipal technicians and the centre’s board. The council says the board’s suggestions have been incorporated into the design. The redevelopment budget is close to €4 million.

The two-storey building will have lifts and a roughly 100-square-metre room for workshops, therapy and rehabilitation. Other planned facilities include spaces for dancing and cultural activities, a café on each floor, a terrace and a hairdressing area. Nearly 200 square metres will be set aside for Social Affairs services.

The complex is also intended to serve as a Municipal Resource Centre for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The council says the existing centre attracts users from Marbella and nearby towns, and that some activities, including Thursday dancing, fill the available space.

The current premises are expected to be vacated during the first week of December. The council says the programme will continue during construction: workshops, dances and other activities are to move to rooms at Nueva Andalucía’s multipurpose centre, while domino will be held in an area being prepared at the district’s local administration office.

The works are expected to take eight months. The council has not provided a specific completion date, so the eventual reopening timetable remains unclear.

The project forms part of Marbella’s Convive Marbella 2030 Integrated Action Plan and is co-funded at 85% by the European Regional Development Fund through Spain’s 2021–2027 Multi-Regional Programme. The council places it among wider investment projects in Nueva Andalucía, but the centre redevelopment is the work with a stated start date and construction period.
