Torremolinos plans to invest €1.6 million in improvements at ten beach locations, with the stated aim of making the shoreline easier to reach and use for people with disabilities, reduced mobility and other specific needs. The project will run along the coast from El Saltillo to Los Álamos.

The planned facilities include accessible toilets, changing rooms, storage and support areas, as well as walkways and platforms across the sand. Some toilets are to be adapted for people who use stoma bags. Pergolas, benches and planters are also planned to provide places to rest in the shade.

The project includes amphibious equipment intended to assist people who need support getting into and out of the sea. The council’s stated objective, as reported in the project material, is to enable beach access and use with greater autonomy and safety.

The ten sites listed are El Saltillo; La Carihuela-Plaza del Remo; Rincón del Sol; Bajondillo-Melia; Bajondillo-Playamar; Copacabana; Playamar-Tres Caballos; Playamar-Hospital Marítimo; Los Álamos 1; and Los Álamos 2. The work is described as renewing and expanding existing services rather than simply replacing them.

As well as supplying and installing beach equipment, the plans cover the groundwork needed to put it into operation. That includes demolition, earthworks, foundations, drainage and water connections, electrical installations and pavement repairs. The contracts are divided into four lots, covering equipment, construction and technical services including site management and health-and-safety coordination.

The improvements are aimed particularly at older people, disabled beachgoers, people with reduced mobility and stoma-bag users. Better routes and rest areas could also benefit other visitors, although the practical effect at each site will depend on the completed facilities.

Companies have until November 19 to submit offers for the works, according to the published project information. The next step is the appointment of contractors; the supplied material does not give a start date or completion timetable.
