Andalusia’s regional road network has gained 108 kilometres since 2019, following the revival of outdated projects and the gradual construction of major strategic routes. The regional government’s new Motorways and High-Capacity Roads Plan, under way since 2024, sets out a total investment of €300 million to add a further 40 kilometres of high-capacity roads across the region. Projects include the Olive Oil Motorway, the Guadalhorce Motorway, Córdoba’s Northern Bypass and the road between Rota and El Puerto de Santa María in Cádiz province.
Andalusian President Juanma Moreno presided over the start-of-works event for the Casapalma-Cerralba section of the Málaga-Ronda-Campillos motorway. The works were awarded in 2010 but never started. After the project was updated, construction is now beginning on a section of more than four kilometres, with an investment of over €51 million.
Moreno said the area had sought the project for years and described it as important for development, safety and connections between inland Málaga and the coast. He said the regional government aimed to speed up transport and connectivity projects. Work is also under way on the design of the next section, between Cerralba and Zalea, which will be another four kilometres. Projects are also being developed for the A-367 access roads to Ronda and the A-384 section between the A-92 and Antequera’s dry port.
The new section will turn the route into a dual carriageway. Moreno, accompanied by the regional government’s new Minister for Public Works and Mobility, Mario Muñoz-Atanet, said more than 150,000 residents of the Guadalhorce area, Sierra de las Nieves and Ronda would be among those most directly affected. He said around 30,000 vehicles use the route each day.
The Motorways and High-Capacity Roads Plan also includes work on six reserved bus-and-high-occupancy-vehicle lanes. Projects in Almonte and Alhaurín de la Torre were under way, while those for Málaga access roads, La Zubia in Granada, and Mairena del Aljarafe and Camas in Seville province had been completed.
