On August 13, 2026, the Andalusian government announced that it had tendered a contract worth more than €22 million to control vegetation on roads under regional ownership. The work is intended to improve road safety by increasing driver visibility and to help prevent fires and accidents. Regional Minister for Development and Mobility Mario Muñoz-Atanet highlighted the importance of continued investment in road maintenance.

The initial budget is €22,023,094, and the contract period is 16 months, with the possibility of a 16-month extension. If extended, the total allocation could exceed €40 million. The work includes clearing brush and pruning trees along road verges, medians and junctions, as well as in other areas within the public road domain. The stated aims include improving visibility of road alignments, signs and safety markers; preventing damage to vehicles and people; reducing fire risk; keeping roads clean; maintaining the road surface; improving traffic safety; and avoiding drainage problems during rain.

The service has been divided into one lot per province to encourage competition and make it easier for small and medium-sized businesses to participate, in accordance with Article 28.2 of Law 9/2017 of November 8 on Public Sector Contracts. The provincial budgets are €2,126,183 for Almería, €2,323,797 for Cádiz, €2,785,081 for Córdoba, €3,916,114 for Granada, €1,404,607 for Huelva, €2,648,109 for Jaén, €2,565,294 for Málaga and €4,253,906 for Seville.

The announcement said the vegetation-control contracts add to other investments launched that year by the regional Development Ministry to improve the road network. These include a €151 million extraordinary resurfacing plan to renew more than 1,000 kilometres of roads, €10 million for repairs to bridges and structures, and €14 million for signage and barrier containment systems. Interested companies could submit bids through the Andalusian government’s Sirec electronic platform until September 18.
