The Biobank of the Andalusian Public Health System, which is overseen by the Regional Ministry of the Presidency, Health and Emergencies, has developed a range of training activities for public healthcare professionals and students in life sciences. Over the past five years, 1,597 people have taken part in one of its courses, and more than 360 training-related activities have been held.
These activities include courses and training sessions, as well as exchanges that allow professionals from other centres to learn how the Biobank operates. The platform also hosts curricular placements for university and vocational training students.
Interest among vocational training students in gaining practical experience at the Biobank has increased in recent years. In 2025, it hosted 17 such students; over the five-year period, it hosted 71 across its provincial nodes in Almería, Córdoba, Málaga and Seville, as well as its coordinating node in Granada. Students took part in work related to the management, processing and storage of biological samples for biomedical research.
Six university students from the University of Granada and Pablo de Olavide University in Seville have also completed curricular placements at the Biobank. During the same period, staff supervised 11 master’s theses and one doctoral thesis.
The placements give students a chance to apply their classroom learning in a professional setting and become familiar with the working methods of a scientific and technical infrastructure within Andalusia’s public health system.
The Biobank is a service platform that provides biological samples and associated data for biomedical research projects. It operates as a network supporting the collection, processing and storage of human biological samples and related data, making them available to the scientific community.
In 2025, the Biobank registered 119,265 samples and data records relating to patients and healthy individuals, and supplied 36,312 samples and data records for research and teaching projects. It also handled about 668 requests.
