Marbella has named a public square after Salvador Gil, known as Moñi, in recognition of his contribution to local football as a player and coach. The tribute was announced at a municipal ceremony on 24 October 2026 attended by his family and the mayor, Ángeles Muñoz.

Muñoz said Gil was the first footballer born in Marbella to reach Spain’s top division. The municipality also cited his record as Tercera División’s leading scorer for six consecutive seasons, three awards as Andalusia’s best player and four promotions with Marbella. After his playing career, he spent 35 years coaching and training players, the mayor said.

Gil founded Marbellí 20 years ago. Muñoz said more than 3,000 children had passed through the youth club and highlighted his efforts to help children from families with limited resources take part in sport.

Gil’s widow, Paqui Gómez, thanked the municipal corporation for approving the honour. She said he had been involved in football from the age of 16 until 76, as both a player and a coach.
