Mijas is reminding visitors to take care when using the barbecue facilities at El Esparragal park, which are now available. The town’s Fire Department says autumn rain should not be taken as a guarantee against fire, and advises against lighting barbecues when strong winds are blowing.

Francisco Jerez, Mijas councillor for Fire Services, said wind can lift embers and carry them towards nearby vegetation. The council’s advice is to change plans rather than use the facilities in those conditions.

Visitors are asked to use only the designated barbecue installations and keep combustible materials away from flames. They should have water available and never leave a fire or embers unattended.

Children should remain at a safe distance and be supervised by an adult, the department says. Its guidance applies throughout the visit: care is needed from the moment a barbecue is lit until everything has been put out.

Before leaving, users should check that embers are completely extinguished and cold. The council warns against tipping them onto the ground or putting them while hot into bins or containers. Visitors are also asked to clear away their rubbish and follow signs and instructions from municipal staff.

The guidance is intended to help people enjoy the park while reducing risks to visitors and the surrounding environment. Anyone who sees a fire starting or another dangerous situation should call 112 immediately.
