Construction to complete the expansion of Las Lagunas’ sports complex in Mijas is under way, with electrical, plumbing and internal partitioning work now in progress, according to the town council. The project has a budget of €4.8 million and is intended to finish a development that has been marked by repeated pauses since it began seven years ago.

The contract was awarded in March to Servimar 2008, with a planned execution period of ten months. Work began in May after preliminary tasks were completed. Mayor Ana Mata visited the site with the councillors responsible for infrastructure and sport to review progress. The council says tests have also been carried out ahead of finishing the building’s façades.

The expansion beside the existing sports centre will provide a multi-purpose building for sports and administrative use, as well as a separate but adjoining therapeutic swimming pool. Plans also include changing rooms, facilities and a central plaza intended to distribute visitors between the different buildings and areas.

The main entrance will be on Camino del Albero. An additional connection from the football-pitch perimeter is planned to give users direct access to the changing rooms without crossing the central plaza. Internal circulation will include open stairs and a lift; the multi-purpose building will also have a protected staircase for evacuation, the council says.

A basement will extend beneath the multi-purpose building and central plaza, and part of the pool building. It is planned to contain 23 parking spaces, including three accessible bays, as well as space for auxiliary installations. Ground-floor areas are to include the main entrance lobbies, changing rooms and administration.

The therapeutic pool building will connect directly to the plaza and include accessible toilets and changing facilities. Its design is planned to feature beams resembling wood and a large window to bring in natural light. The council says external areas and routes linking the new facilities with existing buildings and public roads will meet accessibility requirements.

The complex, named after Mijas-born Olympic snowboard medallist Regino Hernández, was built in 1991. It already includes a football pitch, indoor sports and service building with a gym, heated swimming pool, stands and outdoor courts. The council also says a separate project to renew the roof over the pool area is expected to be formally awarded shortly, with the aim of addressing falling material and water leaks.

The ten-month contract period provides the stated timetable for the expansion, but the council has not given a completion date in its announcement. Until the work is finished, the new pool, parking and other facilities are not yet available for use.
