The Andalusian Ministry of Housing, Youth and Spatial Planning, through the Andalusian Housing and Rehabilitation Agency (AVRA), awarded three unused buildings in central Málaga for redevelopment as protected housing. The properties are at 16 and 18 Álvarez Street and 18 Alta Street. Their rehabilitation will allow for the construction of ten protected homes.
The buildings at 16 and 18 Álvarez Street have areas of 102.54 and 105.11 square metres, respectively, and are expected to provide six homes in total. Both were awarded to Micarmasol S.L. The building at 18 Alta Street, with an area of 143.29 square metres, is expected to provide four homes and was awarded to Arcadia Alta S.L. The three awards total more than €791,000.
Housing Minister Rocío Díaz said the regional government was putting available public property to use to increase the supply of protected housing. She said the properties had been underused for decades and that the government’s priority was to mobilise them to support the construction of more affordable homes.
The awards form part of the ministry’s strategy to restore the residential use of unused properties and address demand for affordable housing in collaboration with private-sector developers. AVRA has also pursued sales of residential properties in Málaga in recent years, including on Dos Aceras and Ollerías streets, as well as completed transactions in the Lagunillas area and on Ermitaño Street. These efforts are intended to promote the construction of protected housing.
The ministry is also continuing to work with Málaga City Council on commitments under the settlement agreement for the Tecnocasas convention, which covered public projects in the Historic Centre Rehabilitation Area. Under the agreement, the city committed to acquire 14 properties owned by AVRA. The two administrations have agreed on valuation reports for the properties, and the administrative process required to complete the transaction is ongoing.
